Certified Roofing Contractor Review: GAF Grand Sequoia

Certified Roofing Contractor Review: GAF Grand Sequoia

Joel Beattie, roofing Tacoma, Washington for nearly 20 years!

This week in Chase Construction North West, Inc.’s roof life blog, we are taking a look at the GAF Grand Sequoia roofing shingle. This review comes from nearly 20 years of experience as a Tacoma/Puyallup roofing contractor.  We feel that this roofing shingle review will be valuable information for you as a homeowner, considering the fact that we are grading this shingle independently from the roofing manufacturer. We have also worked with just about every roofing product on the market so we are able to offer you acomprehensive overview.

GAF Grand Sequoia

The GAF Grand Sequoia roofing shingles are a perfect choice for many homeowners. It’s a key-cut, heavy weight, laminate roofing shingle. Its counterpart is the Grand Canyon, which is the heaviest and thickest shingle in the GAF Product line. The Grand Sequoia is an exact replica of the Canyon, but lighter and more economically priced as part of the GAF value collection.

Sequoia is often used when replacing a cedar shake roof. The Sequoia/Canyon design most accurately reflects the authentic appearance of a real wood shake roof. In fact, there are many communities in which the HOA’s (Home owners association) require that a wood shake roof be replaced with a Grand Sequoia.

GAF Grand Sequoia Has A 4.97/5 Shingle Rating!

Single Ply Roof Systems Are Becoming More Sustainable

Single Ply Roof Systems Are Becoming More Sustainable

Flat_Roof_Install

New flat roofing systems, each with their own specific application purposes, are heading in an environmentally friendly direction, especially since President Obama instituted, “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance,” an executive order (No. 13514) released back in October of 2009. Since then, federal, state, and local governments have been pushing for companies to procure building products with higher, “greener” standards. They are now picking and choosing systems from manufacturers that meet the Environmentally Preferable Product (EPP) purchase requirements set out by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Flat roof products are now being “graded” by durability, manufacturing processes, and overall design (product innovation and corporate governance are the other assessments but they don’t hold as much dominance). Contractors and architects alike are doing their best to fit in with all of this “green” hype and, we can take into account, that residential and commercial flat roofs with noticeably better sustainability are going to appeal more to agencies and building owners.

A recent May article from Professional Roofing states that, “sustainability-related information could prompt a manufacturer’s decisions about supply chain modifications, product content changes, manufacturing adjustments, performance improvements, end-of-life options and corporate governance with the goal of producing more sustainable products.”

NSF International, the forefront in product certification, official regulation, and public health standards for food and water formed a joint committee with ANSI in May of 2009 to develop NSF/ANSI 347 calling it the Sustainability Assessment for Single Ply Roofing Membranes. Their members have spent the last few years collecting data and developing product rankings dependent upon material recyclability into new and usable products, energy conservation during the manufacturing process with a close eye on air and material resources, and material field performance measurements.

With this new set of standards, other construction trades will soon follow in its footsteps to influence new standards across the whole board. You can read up on a few of the guidelines and rankings by visiting NSF International’s website, http://www.nsf.org. To purchase a full copy of NSF/ANSI 347, visit http://www.techstreet.com/nsfgate.html.

Metal Roofing System

Metal Roofing Information For Homeowners

Metal Roofing System

Interest in metal roofing is peaking as people begin to understand its value.

Metal Roofing Information For Homeowners

Chase Construction NW Inc Roofing has continued to see in increased demand for metal roofing. The fact that weather in Tacoma and Puyallup can be very hard on roof systems has a lot to do with that. As a roofing company we believe that homeowners are really beginning to see the value of a metal roof. The upfront cost of metal roofing can be 1.5-2 times more than most roofing shingles, but if you think about replacing that composition roof 2-3 times in the next 60 years it changes the equation.

As a local roofing company we believe its worth the investment to utilize a metal roofing system. Metal roofing rates better with insurance companies than many other types of roofing shingles. In fact in some states you can save substantially off of your home insurance using a metal roof.

Metal Roofing Price Per Square

If you are considering re-roofing with a metal roof you should expect to pay anywhere from $500.00-$750.00 per square or $5.00-$7.50 per sq foot. You will want to be sure that the roofing company installing your steel or metal roofing is a licensed, bonded and insured roofing contractor. Please read our blog “How to safely hire a roofing contractor”. You will also want to make sure that the contractor is certified with the roofing material they are installing.

Metal Roofing Panels Are Water Shedding

An interesting fact I learned about metal or steel roofing is that the system is water shedding, not water proof. Don’t get me wrong please, they are designed to keep water out of your house and do that effectively. Manufacturers however warranty their panels, the paint and material. If you want a guarantee for the “water tight metal roof system” you have to install the roof with special specifications determined by the manufacturer. Depending on the manufacturer this upgraded warranty can cost extra money.  Metal roofs are absolutely safe, as long as they are installed correctly, so choose your contractor wisely. Like wood shake and concrete tile, a lot of importance is placed on underlayment when installing a metal roof.

Metal Roofing And Underlayment

One more pointer for installing a metal roof is making sure you use a good underlayment. A standard 15 # felt underlayment should not be used. If you are going to use a felt underlayment you should use 30#. Chase Construction NW Inc suggests using one of the following two products for metal roof underlayment:

Leak Barrier: SBS Modified Peel And Stick Membrane

Leak barrier also known as ice and water shield is used to protect a roofs most critical leak areas. Please see “Why leak barrier is critical to your roofing system”, to learn more.  On a metal roof it is a best practice to use leak barrier on valleys, step walls, penetrations, ridges and around the entire perimeter edge on both eaves and rakes.  To further protect your roof and home we suggest using leak barrier as the underlayment on the entire roof. It is applied the same way as any other underlayment, but offers significantly more protection. This product is more expensive and labor intensive in comparison to standard felt underlayment’s, but well worth the extra expense for the level of security and peace of mind it brings to your home.

 Titanium UDL Synthetic Underlayment

Titanium UDL is the most common upgrade choice for underlayment’s under metal roofing. Its most common use is on commercial buildings, but it is used frequently on residential roofing applications as well. Titanium UDL is 8 times lighter and stronger than 30 # felt. It carries a class A fire rating, the highest fire rating. It is impervious to mold growth. Its most treasured feature is the temperature performance. It a can handle extreme temperatures between -40 F to 240 F. Like leak barrier it is more expensive than felt underlayment’s, but well worth the price.

Certified Roofing Contractor Review: Timberline HD Roofing Shingles

Timberline HD Product Review

Roofing Shingle Review: GAF Timberline HD Architectural Laminate/Composite Shingle

As a roofing company Chase Construction NW, Inc. has been providing some of the best roofing services in the Northwest for over a decade, with 20 years experience. In those 20 years we have installed virtually every type of roofing from almost every manufacturer. We have seen products come and go, and others stand the test of time. As a new resource to consumers looking for information on roofing and its application we are starting a new series in our roofing blog called Certified Roofing Contractor Review. In this series we will share products that we feel in our professional opinion are the best roofing products to use.

Today I would like to review GAF’s Timberline HD architectural laminate roofing shingle. We have been installing GAF shingles for over 15 years so I believe our input should be of some value to you.

A few facts about the GAF Timberline HD roofing shingle:

The Timberline shingle is Americas long standing # 1 selling shingle.

In 2011 GAF made advance technological changes to their roofing matt enabling them to offer the new Limited Lifetime warranties. You can learn more about these changes by watching “Chasing The Dream” and “Extreme Shingle Testing”. This changed the market and made the 30, 40 and 50 year options obsolete. All other roofing manufacturers made the shift to limited life time also, but made no changes to their mats. This makes our confidence in the Timberline HD shingle even stronger.

The GAF brand and Timberline HD shingle are backed independently by the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. This is not an easy industry backing endorsement to achieve, furthering the quality and credibility of the Timberline shingle.

With the new matt on the Timberline roofing shingle, GAF was able to lighten the weight per roofing square from 240 lbs to 220lbs. This is great for the roofing installers as its easier on their bodies. However, the reduced shingle weight has also become a point of controversy in the roofing industry. Many of the other top shingle brands such as CertainTeed, Owens Corning and IKO have criticized the reduced weight of the Timberline Shingle. GAF’s response to this criticism is their fit vs fat campaign. GAF has proven the durability of their new advance matt technology through extreme testing, and left their competitors with no real substantial ability to discredit the industries leading Timberline HD shingle.

We highly recommend the Timberline HD shingle. Here are a few more bullet points for the Timberline shingles:
