New GAF Cobra Hip Vent

Keeping Proper Attic Ventilation in Mind

Proper attic ventilation is essential in every home. If your attic is not properly ventilated, heat and moisture can build up, causing your energy bills to skyrocket. Moisture may not be penetrating your roof, but humidity from your home can still be trapped in your attic, causing mold and mildew to grow, and be absorbed by the rafters and the roof deck, causing rot.

Attic Ventilation Solutions

proper attic ventilation is key for any roof systemOne popular solution for attic ventilation is soffit -ridge ventilation, such as GAF’s Cobra Intake Pro Rooftop Intake Vent and Exhaust Vent. This combination allows fresh cool air in and drives out warm moist air, promoting your homes energy efficiency. Since it is encouraging the exit of warm moist air, it also inhibits the growth of harmful mold and mildew, and prevents deterioration from roof rot. In addition, it prevents harmful ice damming on the roof during freezing temperatures. When installed with existing soffit vents, this system can improve attic airflow by up to 20%.

A Solution for New Architecture Trends.

Modern architectural styles of homes have evolved in the last 25-30 years to have more hips than ridge. proper attic ventilation is key for any roof systemThese “cut-up” roof plane designs have made effective ridge venting impractical. GAF acknowledged this need and developed it’s new Cobra® Hip Vent. In combination with Cobra Intake Pro Rooftop Intake Vent, it has the same benefits as Cobra® Exhaust Vent for Roof Ridge.

• Removes excess heat and moisture
• Prevents roof rot
• Limits the growth of mold and mildew
• Guards against ice damming

This new innovative product has 9 square inches of NFA for effective exhaust venting on homes with minimal to no ridge. It is virtually invisible from the street with it’s 5/8″ low-profile, making it an aesthetically pleasing option. Plus, it is also the only hip vent product available that can be fully applied with a nail gun, making it easier on the contractor!

High Performance Underlayment

Roofing in the Pacific Northwest

What is UnderlayementThere are many components that go into a new roof, and the quality of those products contribute to the over all performance that you will get out of your roof. Let’s face it, it rains a lot here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and waterproofing is essential to any project when it comes to the roof. For this reason, one of the most important aspects of any roofing system is the underlayment.

What is underlayment on a roof?

The underlayment is an extra layer of protection that goes between your shingles and the roof deck. This is an important aspect of any roof system because it protects the roof from penetrating moisture by shedding water away from the roof deck. It can also provide protection from rain while the shingles are being installed.

Deck Defense® by Owens Corning

Our friends at Owens Corning have the perfect underlayment for your next roofing project! Deck Defense® is a high performance underlayment, covering all your needs, and even has a 30 year limited warranty!

  • Easy Installation: With extra-wide 10 square rolls, each roll provides more than 4 times the coverage compared to #30 felt underlayment roll.
  • Durable Performance: Compared to felt underlayment, Deck Defense® durable synthetic construction is designed to reduce the chance for tears, even when walked on, and stays intact in high winds.
  • High-traction and slip resistant: In addition to being tear resistant when walked on, it is designed with a textured and coated top layer that provides traction contributing to a safe work environment.
  • Superior water protection: Compared to standard felt underlayment, Deck Defense® offers long-term moisture protection. It acts as a non-absorbent, secondary water-shedding barrier and reduces water intrusion even when exposed.

A Roofing Debate

Nails or Staples?

We at Chase Construction NW, Inc. have been installing quality roofs around the Puget Sound for 15 years now, and have experience in a wide variety of roofing applications. We have seen a lot of debates in the roofing industry on different practices of installation, and today we are going to address one. The debate of nails vs staples is a hot one, and we definitely have an opinion! Both are approved by roofing manufacturers depending on what area you are in, but which one is better?

Applying shingles with staples.

staples or nailsLet’s start with staples. Some roofers love them, some hate them, some are surprised that they are even still around for shingle installation. As far as ease of use and cost, staples are in the lead. It is much easier hauling around a much lighter staple gun vs a heavier nail gun, even the staples are easier to carry than the nails (as you can see from the picture to the right). Staples are also great for tearing off a roof because they come right up (that’s not a good thing). Yes, staples are easy to use, but it is difficult to install them properly. Staples must be put in in a straight line, and holding the staple gun straight is awkward and unnatural for the human hand resulting in crooked staples. When the staple is improperly installed, the result is a less than ideal wind rating, and the shingle is easily dislodged from the roof. Staples were very popular in the 80’s and 90’s, but since, they have been rejected by building codes due to the swarm of problems due to improper installation.

staples or nails

Using Nails to install your shingles.

Using nails for your installation is more costly due to the cost of the nails themselves, and the fact that nail guns are heavier and more cumbersome to load. But they are easier and take less time to install, they hold the shingle more effectively, and will not void your warranty! Because of the shape of a nail vs a staple, you don’t have to worry about holding the gun straight like with a staple gun, it is impossible to install a crooked nail. Did I Burien Roofing Contractorsmention the not voiding your warranty part? Most manufacturers do not allow staples because of the fact that they do not hold in high winds, and they are so commonly installed improperly. We understand that a new roof is expensive, but so is a long series of repairs, and a shortened lifespan of the roof due to inferior products and installation. It is generally thought of among quality roofing contractors that staples are used by those that are more worried about their bottom line than the quality of workmanship.

Waterproofing is very important in the roofing industry, and a good underlayment prevents leaks from wind driven rain, and ice dams on vulnerable areas on the roof. Used as a water resistant layer beneath the shingle, CertainTeed manufactures several grades of underlayment.

Starter Shingles

Starter shingles provide extra protection to your roof with out taking away from the overall design, and they save time on the application!  CertainTeed manufactures starter shingles under the product names Swiftstart® to be used with the Landmark® series and High Performance Starter to be used with Grand Manor®Highland Slate® and Hatteras® shingles.
