It can be tough finding a roofing contractor that you can trust. Everybody knows somebody who hired a bad roofer and it caused them a lot of headache and financial hardship.
Getting a new roof is a big project that takes expertise and diligence to get right the first time. In this article, we’ll discuss the 3 best ways to find a roofing contractor that is trustworthy and will get the job done right.
Roofing contractor reviews and ratings
Knowing what to look for with reviews and ratings for roofers is perhaps the most important part of finding which contractors to call for an estimate. There are a bunch of review sites these days, but the most prominent is Google. Oftentimes you’ll want to look at BBB and Yelp as well.
For ratings, you want to find the average for contractors in your area, and then seek roofers with above average rating and above average quantity of ratings. Knowing the averages shows you what the norm is for the industry in your region, so when you go above that you know you’re in a good spot.
But ratings can be misleading. Some businesses buy ratings or incentivize them from customers in such a way that they’re not that meaningful. For example, customers will often add a review with their rating. If you see a lot of ratings without reviews, you can discard them.
Sometimes the same applies to short and generic looking reviews. If you see a lot of reviews that don’t seem like they’re that meaningful or that an invested person wrote them, it may be because they’re not.
A lot of customers will leave short and sweet reviews, and some leave longer, more detailed, and more emotional reviews. What you want to look for is a mix of the two. They will give you a real sense of the common experience of the roofing contractor’s customers, and how good of an experience the project was for them.
If it is very common for a roofing contractor’s customers to come away happy and willing to express so in a review, it’s a powerful sign that you’re looking at a good roofer. We take great pride in the many wonderful testimonials our happy customers have given us.
Years the roofing contractor has been in business
This one is pretty straightforward, yet extremely important. Nearly half of roofing contractors go out of business within the first several years of operation. It’s a labor intensive industry and a lot of roofers jump in headfirst. This means that it can take many years of experience for a roofing contractor to develop proper expertise to be reliable.
Every roofer makes a lot of mistakes. Some of them make such bad mistakes or such frequent mistakes that they go out of business. But then there are the roofing contractors who have been around for 15+ years. They’re the ones whose mistakes are mostly in the past, and they have an excellent handle on how to get the job done right.
Even those with many years of experience still make mistakes, but they’re also the kind of contractors who are diligent at fixing any mistakes they make. Contractors who don’t have a lot of experience are often ones that don’t reliably fix issues that arise.
Typically, the more experience the better. We’ve been in business since 2002, many employees have been with Chase Construction North West for 10+ years, and the amount of technical expertise we have with roofing is sky high.
Certification level of the roofing contractor
Manufacturers of roofing shingles have been getting more into the contracting side of the industry over the last decade. They don’t install shingles, but they can put a great deal of effort into understanding the landscape, training installers, and presenting to homeowners what they need to know most about roofing contractors.
This has led to manufacturers certifying some contractors on installing the manufacturers’ shingles. The best manufacturers, like GAF, have tiers of certification. The top is Master Elite, which is given only to the most dependable and highest quality roofing contractors. Only about 3% of all roofing contractors are Master Elite, and we’ve been GAF Master Elite roofers since 2011, which is one of the best track records in the country.
Finding the most reputable manufacturer, finding their highest tier of certification, then finding their longest certified and highest rated roofers is a spectacular way to make sure you’ll hire the right roofing contractor.
With GAF, you get the additional and extremely important benefit of the Golden Pledge warranty. Only Master Elites can provide it, and it’s the best warranty in the industry, coming with 50 years for material defect and 25 years for misapplication.
Honorary mention: make sure any roofing contractor you’re looking to hire is licensed, bonded, and insured. This should go without saying. Be very wary of hiring a roofer who isn’t all of these.
